Tutorial: Garland of Kermesse Lights

Materials

• Outdoor-rated string lights
• Outdoor-rated extension cord, if required
• Weather-resistant hooks, clips, or cable ties
• Measuring tape
• Stable ladder
• GFCI-protected outdoor electrical outlet

Plan the installation

Measure the area where the garland will hang and choose a string long enough to cover it without stretching the electrical cable. Identify secure attachment points such as posts, beams, or purpose-made hooks. For a relaxed festival appearance, allow a gentle curve between supports.

Check the light manufacturer’s instructions for the maximum number of strings that may be connected together. Confirm that every light string, plug, extension cord, and connector intended for outdoor use is clearly rated for that purpose.

Install the garland

1. Test the lights. Place the string on the ground, inspect it for damage, and plug it in briefly to confirm that every bulb works.
2. Mark the supports. Space attachment points evenly along the planned route.
3. Install the fasteners. Use clips or hooks suitable for the mounting surface. Do not use nails or staples that could puncture the cable.
4. Hang the lights. Begin near the power source and work toward the opposite end. Support the garland at each marked point without pulling the cord tight.
5. Secure the connection. Keep plugs and connectors elevated and protected from standing water. Avoid creating a trip hazard with the supply cable.
6. Perform a final check. Make sure the bulbs do not touch flammable materials and that doors, gates, and walkways remain unobstructed.

Safe use and maintenance

• Unplug the garland before replacing bulbs or adjusting its position.
• Do not use a string with cracked sockets, exposed conductors, loose connections, or a damaged plug.
• Use only replacement bulbs specified by the manufacturer.
• Keep electrical connections away from irrigation, puddles, and areas where water collects.
• Do not exceed the rated capacity of the outlet, extension cord, or light string.
• Inspect the installation after severe weather and remove temporary lighting when it is no longer needed.

Creating a festive arrangement

Warm white bulbs provide a traditional atmosphere, while multicolored bulbs create a brighter fairground effect. A consistent bulb size and even spacing will make the garland feel coordinated. For larger areas, parallel rows or a fan-shaped arrangement can distribute light more evenly.
